Do you know this feeling when you are working, and then the huge urge comes to you to check your email, grab a snack, or jump into another task real quick? ⁣

I bet you know this feeling. Thousands of people experience emotional eating or waste endless hours watching crappy TV or scrolling social media, especially when they have tons of important work to do. ⁣⁣We're master procrastinators. 

⁣⁣

You might ask why we are wired in a way that makes it hard for us to succeed? 

⁣⁣

Actually, it is pretty simple - our brain works the way which always wants to move us from pain (stressful work, important task, etc.) to pleasure. It is really trying to protect us and make us feel better as it has for so many years before. 

⁣⁣

So when you get an urge to snack or go do something pleasurable in the middle of working, it's very likely that your brain is trying to protect you from feeling stressed about work. 

⁣⁣

Now, in this situation, you have three options. ⁣⁣

Option 1:⁣⁣

 

To go for the pleasure and procrastinate on work. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣

Option 2: ⁣⁣

 

To strictly forbid yourself. But do you know what happens when something is forbidden? We want it even more! It doesn't stop us from craving it. ⁣⁣

Option 3: ⁣⁣

 

Tell yourself nicely that you will do it in 10 minutes and spend 10 minutes truly understanding why you want to do it. After doing it a few times, I realize that most times I am opening my fridge door, it is definitely not because I am hungry but because I am bored/not excited about my task. 

 

Then, understanding my emotions and the reason behind them, I find new ways to motivate myself to accomplish the task without consuming empty calories or staring at my phone's screen without any purpose. ⁣⁣

 

And here is my one secret to productivity and beating procrastination.⁣⁣

 

Always be mindful of things that you're doing and reasons for why you're doing them. Many people think that procrastination is a personality trait and that you're either a procrastinator or you're not when it's not really the case. 

 

When you're trying to succeed in life and lead a good quality life, the first thing you need to do is learn to understand your brain and how it works. That is why every successful person always talks about mindset changes. 

 

If you don't try to understand your actions and your feelings, you'll go through life, thinking that things happen to you. That you were born this way, so there is no way you can change. And that is a very sure way to stay stuck in the same space and lead a life that is not very fulfilling. 

 

If you choose to go and understand why you're acting the way you're acting and what drives us, as humans, to react to work and other things in certain ways, you have the power to change and improve. 

 

Now that you know that procrastination is not your personality type and that it doesn't mean that that's the thing you need to deal with and it makes your life harder, you can go and find a way to fight procrastination and finally stop meeting your goals. 

 

Honestly, learning this lesson has transformed my life completely. The productivity, focus, and self-awareness have truly increased, and I finally focus on doing just ONE thing at the time and accomplishing it without jumping around while it was a huge problem I had in the past. 

 

So, what can you do to improve your productivity and quality of life?

 

There are so many things you can do to start understanding how your brain works so you could improve your productivity levels. 

 

Now that you know it's not just happening to you and that you have the power, I suggest you start working hard on improving your mindset. 

 

You can start researching different ways and techniques you can beat procrastination and work more efficiently. One of those strategies is The Ivy Lee method that allows you to do the work that matters easier. 

 

I suggest you start listening to podcasts that talk about changing your mindset and hacking your brain to work better and achieve more. Some of my recommendations would be the Tim Ferriss Podcast and Ed Mylett Show
